Why couldn't they have built this?

Thinking of the i3 and E1 and other electric commuter cars today and wishing VW actually made this. Yeah, I know it had the powertrain from a Polo, but it might make a decent electric vehicle. C'mon, how can you go wrong with removable gullwing doors?

BTW, lots of fun stuff shown when you do a google search for VW scooter.

It's cool but where is the rest of it? Does it have 3 wheels?

Yep - three wheels. Might make a good wagon...

That looks like a fun plaything, but wouldn't work very well for the daily commute. Maybe I'm just old, but I like quiet, air conditioning, and a radio. Now weekends, that's a different story.

Well you're not as old as I am! I was just disappointed when they said they would make it and then they didn't.

It always amazes me the amount of interesting product that comes out of manufacturers with claims that, if sufficient interest exists, they'll make it. If they do, it is either too watered-down or significantly changed to be of interest any longer. As I recall, the VW Up! was supposed to have a rear-mounted, horizontally opposed twin, and that seemed like a novel idea that could have led to all sorts of interesting products. But when it came out it seemed to be more of the same. I understand why they do that, but I get tired of the teasing.

My mother wanted one of the Microbuses they were showing for years, and then it didn't come out. Then there was the Bulli, and it too died. I want another Scirocco or Corrado, but I'm not going to hold my breath. What do we get instead? More SUVs, fewer wagons, and a rebadged Chrysler minivan. Sorry VW, I'm not interested. It doesn't matter if you badge it as a VW, an Audi, a Porsche, a Seat, a Skoda or any of your other brands, I still don't want it.

I just saw a new audi and a new vw parked and they are almost identical. In terms of volume most people are boring and want a golf or jetta.

For the most part, I'm OK with the purchase of a Golf or Jetta. IMHO, the Jetta's a bit on the dull side these days, and I'm not a big proponent of sedans. Unfortunately, in the US we don't have a choice of anything smaller from VW. I'd love to see something that challenges the norm, or perhaps goes back to the counterculture essence that was the basis of their popularity ages ago, and a Golf rebodied as a Beetle ain't what I'm talking about. Simple, efficient and practical, with a touch of ingenuity. The last Jetta I was in had me thinking fondly of a Camry rental car I had a while back, and that is not a good thing.
